IETF has presented a new standard for device configuration intended to support advanced network wide configuration changes among other things. The new protocol comes with a data modeling language called YANG. The two in combination opens up a new range of possibilities and removes much of the pain previously associated with automated device configuration.
Providing an introduction to the NETCONF protocol and the YANG modeling language and discussing how transactional configuration changes are supported, how guardrails can be achieved and how configuration validation can be performed before applying a new set of configurations. |

INTRODUCING NTAF
NTAF, or the Network Test Automation Forum, is an emerging body whose charter is to create specifications for the automation of network test equipment such as traffic generators, protocol emulators, impairment generators, layer one switches, as well as associated software tools for test case authoring, scheduling, and reporting. Initial representation for NTAF consists of 11 companies including some of the world’s largest service providers (including BT & Verizon), network equipment manufacturers (including Cisco and Ericsson), and test equipment vendors. NTAF technical specifications will establish requirements for device discovery, network topology specification, test case definition, results formatting, and other technical obstacles that will ultimately ease the challenges associated with assembling a test lab consisting of equipment from multiple vendors.
